Unit Standards

Unit standards can be described as building blocks towards a qualification and accumulate credits on the National Learner Record Database (NLRD). Each unit standard is pegged on a level on the National Qualification Framework (NQF) and there are 8 levels on the NQF. Credits so accumulated promote the thought of life long learning. Unit standards require a learner to demonstrate competency/skills against specific outcomes. Both formative and summative assessment methods are used to assess the competency/skills against specific outcomes. Learners with previous knowledge/skills can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) this means that no “training” is necessary and the learner will only be assessed where he/she demonstrates the ability to meet the requirements of each specific outcome of the relevant unit standard. The outcomes are learner paced which means that most learners with a reasonable amount of subject matter knowledge and skills should be able to successfully complete a specific unit standard on the same day. A successful learner will be judged “COMPETENT” and unsuccessful “NOT YET COMPETENT”. Learners judged “NOT YET COMPETENT” will have to be re-assessed
